holly jolly.
catching up.
So I did the thing that I have tended to do with things that require regular attention and forgot that this blog existed, heh. It's been about two months since my last post, here are the highlights:
-
Endured a cyclone: Cylone Fina hit Darwin as a category 3 then category 4 cyclone. My first cyclone! I missed Cyclone Marcus back in 2018 as I was in Perth for one of my bachelor parties, so it was interesting to go through this one. Work sent us home for two days, so I spent that time watching Peacemaker (not bad!) and reading while the rain and the wind howled around the house. The aftermath was pretty impressive; an enormous amount of tree litter everywhere, including a few pretty big downed trees near where I stay. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it was still quite a thing to witness.

Roadtripping AKA Climbing Stuff AKA The Mount Barker Bakery: Louise and I drove down to Mount Barker so that we could climb Bluff Knoll which was beautiful. Challenging, but beautiful. We stayed in the back of an art gallery which was fun, and bought a Dingo Flour bag from an op-shop as another reminder of our meeting place. Then a couple weekends later we drove to Denmark. A strange experience for me, since my family used to go down there for holidays and eventually had a holiday house down there which turned into my Dad's place when my folks split. A complicated place to visit, because there were a lot of fun times, but also a couple of years of mostly fear and trauma. It was nice to walk around with Louise, talk about the stuff that we used to do and the places we used to go. Seeing Williams Bay, Greens Pool, and Ocean Beach brought up a lot of memories of bombing around there with friends and my siblings. We also ended up doing the Valley of the Giants treetop walk on the drive out which was incredible. And of course, the Mount Barker Bakery. My goodness. I think we went there half a dozen times and they just didn't miss. Incredible, and deserving of their pie awards.

Gamejams: One public, one private. I participated in a Kris Kringle game jam with the Northern Territory gamedevs. It was super fun getting assigned a person and making something that would bring a smile to their face. My game was for Dylan, the legendary motivator behind...well, honestly the guy behind the existence of a centralised gamdev community in the NT. I made a jokey simulator of his dog running around smashing food off an oversized set of tables in Sol at the Christmas Party Simulator 2025. It was fun to make and hopefully fun to play for Dylan, but he hasn't had a chance yet because we were all busy with...

Christmas: Which was a bit of a letdown this year because my shift started on Christmas Day. :( So I had to get all of my celebrations out of the way early and then leave Louise to get through the holiday season by herself while I came up here for a couple of weeks. Certainly not ideal, but with my shift roster, next year I will finish 2 days before Christmas day. Swings and roundabouts!
Okay, it's nine p.m. on day five of swing so I'm not quite up to burning the midnight oil forever or I'll be a jibbering mess by day fourteen. I'll try and remember to make a New Year's Resolutions post. I've got a lot of things I want to do this coming year and finite time to do them, so it'd be good to get some words on the page about that.
